I bought a new product and made it free

Last week, I acquired productvideoexamples.com
It’s a small acquisition.
The product costed $29 for visitors. I immediately made it free.
Here's why I did this and how I think about product growth:

The small acquisition strategy

If you are an old subscriber of the newsletter, I’ve talked about how tools and small resources help SEO traffic grow a lot.
Sometimes more than blogs too.
And we’ve been building and buying tools for a while now.
My hit rate? About 50%.
Not amazing, but here's the thing - I can afford to fail on these now.
Revenue from my main projects (Outrank at $120k MRR, Revid scaling 6 figs, SuperX launch going super well) gives me room to experiment.
The math is simple: Buy small, test fast, keep what works.

Why Product Video Examples made sense

Dom reached out asking if I'd be interested.
I wasn't actively looking to buy anything.
But it hit me - this is exactly what worked before.
The audience alignment is perfect:
  • People looking for product video inspiration
  • Are usually launching their own products
  • Need tools like Revid.ai for content creation
  • Might want SuperX.so for social media automation
Same target audience, different entry point.
So I decided to take the plunge.
Here's the bet:
Step 1: Buy the site with existing traffic Step 2: Remove the paywall (was $29, now free) Step 3: Increase traffic through better positioning and SEO Step 4: Redirect visitors to my product ecosystem Step 5: Capture emails for my newsletter
It's not revolutionary. It's just disciplined and slow growth.
Slow is boring. But boring 100 times is what works.
I put about $5k into this experiment.
The traffic wasn't massive, but Dom deserved to be rewarded for the great work he put in.
Two key questions I always ask before buying:
  • What's the traffic and where is it coming from? (I want to know if the traffic will stick around after acquisition)
  • Who are those people? (so can I convert this traffic into revenue elsewhere)
Both looked promising here.

A few years ago, I couldn't afford experiments like this.
Now I can test these traffic acquisition strategies because:
1 - Multiple revenue streams provide cushion
2 - I understand my customer journey better
3 - The product suite creates multiple conversion opportunities
When you have 5 products serving the same audience, every traffic source becomes more valuable.

What's next?

ProductVideoExamples.com is now free and integrated into my ecosystem.
I'll be watching:
  • Traffic retention after the acquisition
  • Email signups from new visitors
  • Conversion to my paid products
  • Overall ROI over 6 months
If it works, I'll do more of these.

Your opportunity here:

If you have a small product that might make sense for someone like me, I'd love to consider it.
The criteria:
  • Serves creators, founders, or builders
  • Has existing traffic or audience
  • Aligned with growth/productivity tools
  • Reasonably priced for experimentation

Tweet of the week

This one truly impacted me.
Success is not about always winning, being motivated, and staying on top of your game.
It’s about knowing you will get there even when nothing is going right for you.

I will see you next week,
Until then,
Keep building
