We’ve almost forgotten how different life was before ChatGPT dropped.
Remember when copying a product was hard?
Those were the days... 😅
When Tweet Hunter started blowing up, we got copied maybe 10 times. And this was pre-AI, when building a SaaS actually took work.
Fast forward to today:
- Revid AI is getting copied like 100+ times
- Someone literally AI-cloned our entire landing page
- New copycats pop up weekly
But here's the thing - I'm not worried.
Let me tell you why 👇
Copy pasta 🍝
Many people think copying is the best way to get to MVP.
So they take a product, and copy it.
Simple. Right?
Here's what they do:
- Clone your landing page
- Copy your features
- Undercut your pricing
- Launch on Product Hunt
And you know what? Let them.
You shouldn’t panic if you ever get in a situation like this 😁
Here's what they CAN'T copy:
- Your understanding of the problem
- Your relationship with users
- Your education layer
Let me explain that last one...
Education as a Moat 🎓
“A good business is like a strong castle with a deep moat around it. I want sharks in the moat to keep away those who would encroach on the castle.”
— Warren Buffet
If your company has no moat (layer to beat competition) — you are doing something wrong. And in B2B software - it’s usually education.
Look at any successful enterprise company.
Take HubSpot:
- Are they just a CRM? No
- Are they just marketing tools? No
- They're teaching sales teams HOW to convert leads
- They're training marketers HOW to think
They're selling expertise, not just software.
They offer an entire experience and transform the customer’s business.
Now tell me:
Would someone shift all their workflow integrations away from HubSpot just to save 20% on the billing?
No they won’t.
Building Your Moat
Your product isn't just features.
It's a workflow.
An opinion on how things should be done. A path to success.
Example:
- Copycats: "Here's an AI video maker"
- Us at Revid: "Here's how to actually grow on social media using AI videos"
The entire positioning changes.
The Real Secret:
If you want to stay relevant?
Focus on making your users successful.
Everything then will sort itself out.
- Create content that teaches
- Build workflows that work
- Show them the whole picture
- Guide them step by step
That's what copycats can't replicate.
Where to go from here?
“Yeah Tibo, all this is good info. But what should I be doing now?”
Here you go:
- Let go of feature anxiety
- Double down on education
- Build relationships and network
- Share your expertise
- Create clear workflows
Remember:
They can copy your code.
They can't copy your brain.
I’m also vert happy to announce that I’m partnering up with Rob to build and grow SuperX together. He also made this cool video about the same. Worth a watch:
See you next week,
Keep building
