How we turned $300 into $3 million

Do not index
Outrank just hit $300,000 MRR with 2,500+ websites using it.
We rolled out a major update this month: SEO articles that sound like actual humans wrote them.
But this isn’t how we started.
15 months ago, this was a $300 MRR blog generator going nowhere.
Here's how we got here and what we learned 👇
I hope this is useful for you too!
(Stick around towards the end for a surprise 👀)

The $300 MRR problem

Eugene (my co-founder for Outrank.so) had a product stuck at $300 MRR.
It generated AI blog posts. That's it.
He'd been grinding on it alone, trying everything. Nothing moved the needle.
I looked at it and saw something different.
This wasn't just a content tool. It had great potential to be an autonomous SEO machine.
Different frame → Different outcome.
The lesson: Positioning beats features every time.
You can have the best product in the world, but if you frame it wrong, nobody cares.
Eugene was selling "AI blog writer" in a sea of AI blog writers.
We repositioned it as "SEO automation platform that builds your web presence while you sleep."
And the whole game changed for us.

The unlock: finding our real moat

A moat is very important for any business, especially in the age of AI.
It’s your defense against uncertainty and competition.
Content alone has no moat.
Every AI tool can write articles now. GPT, Claude, Gemini - they all output readable content.
So why would anyone choose Outrank?

The unlock: backlinks exchange program

Content alone has no moat. Every AI tool can write readable articles.
The insight: layer backlinks on top.
Every user on Outrank joins a backlink network.
When Outrank generates content, the AI links to relevant posts from other users' sites.
This is contextual, not random.
You write about email marketing, and Outrank links to another user's email subject line guide.
They write about SaaS metrics, Outrank links to your churn article.
Real backlinks from real sites in adjacent niches.
Isn't this what Google penalizes?
No. Most agencies insert links with zero relevance. Google detects that.
Outrank only adds contextually matched links. The link adds value for the reader.
Google actually rewards that.
Until now:
25,000+ backlinks added. 750,000+ articles created.
Matches are genuinely relevant.
One user after 49 days: "DR jumped from 5 to 25. All I did was set up the blog."
The lesson: Network effects turn commodities into moats.
A backlink network that gets more valuable with every user is a real business.
No competitor can copy that overnight.

The narrative shift: AI didn't kill SEO

This was also a time when everyone was panicking.
"ChatGPT killed SEO." "Nobody uses Google anymore." "AI makes search irrelevant."
You could find 5 viral X threads on this daily.
Well, I didn’t think this way.
ChatGPT doesn't magically know about your tool. It searches Google and Bing to find what to recommend.
So if you want AI to recommend you, you need to own the web.
More articles. More backlinks. More presence in search results.
That's exactly what Outrank.so does.
Then OpenAI launched Atlas in early 2026. Their new web engine.
It validated everything we'd been saying: web presence is how you get into LLMs.
When users ask AI assistants for recommendations, these tools scan web search results first.
Pages with better SEO rankings appear more often in AI responses.
One well optimized article can appear in thousands of AI conversations.

The lesson: Position into the fear, not away from it.
Everyone said "AI is killing SEO."
We said "AI makes SEO more important than ever."
Exactly opposite narrative.
The narrative that wins gets the customers.

If you want to try Outrank.so and grow your SEO efforts, I have a small gift for you: You can try Outrank for 20% off your first month. I generally don’t do discounts, as I think they devalue everything we’ve built. But I’m doing it this time: use code ‘TIBO’ at checkout. Outrank.so

How we actually grew it

Here’s our timeline:
January 2025: $300 MRR. Eugene's original product. I joined.
March 2025: $10k MRR. Product Hunt launch. Repositioned as SEO infrastructure.
May 2025: $40k MRR. The affiliate program kicked in. One affiliate made $3k in a single month.
Late 2025: $200k MRR.
April 2026: $300k MRR. 2,500+ websites. Generating 50,000+ articles per month.

3 things drove growth at different stages:

Early: Distribution. I had the audience and insights. Eugene had the product. We launched.
Middle: Product results. Users seeing growth. Real, measurable outcomes + Testimonials.
Late: Narrative. The AI resilience argument gave people a reason to accelerate, not pause.
The lesson: Different growth levers at different stages.
What works at $10k MRR doesn't work at $200k MRR.
I also believe our pricing is perfect for massive growth: it’s stupid simple:
$99/month for 30 articles. No credits. No tiers. No confusion.
At $3.30 per article, the math just works in our favour for everything that we give in the product.

What's next

We're at $300k MRR. That's not where this stops.
Two things we're focused on now:
1. Content quality that matches the stakes
The game isn't just "does it rank?" anymore. It's "does it rank AND get cited by AI?"
We're pushing deeper into brand voice matching. Richer article structures. More content formats.
This month's update is step one: articles that sound like an expert wrote them, not a content mill.
2. The network advantage compounds
Here's the thing about network effects most people get wrong: they don't grow in a straight line.
Right now, we have 2500 websites in the backlink pool.
That means each user can get matched with 2500 potential linking opportunities.
When we hit 10,000 websites, the value doesn't just quadruple.
It explodes.
Why? Because the pool gets deeper in ways that matter:
1 - More topical coverage means better contextual fits. 2 - More niche diversity means higher relevance scores. 3 - More volume means more linking opportunities per article. 4 - The entire network's domain authority rises together.
That compounding advantage is what no competitor can copy by launching tomorrow.
We're not in the AI writing business. We're in the "make sure AI can find you" business.
Google, ChatGPT, whatever search engine exists in 2028 - they all pull from the web.
The web is the game. We're helping you own more of it.

The meta-lesson

Outrank isn't special because of AI writing. Anyone can build that.
It's special because of two things:
  1. Network effects through contextual and relevant backlink exchange
  1. Narrative positioning that turned AI fear into acceleration
The lesson for builders: Find the moat. Own the narrative. Move fast.
Eugene had the product stuck at $300 MRR for quite some time.
We repositioned it, added network effects, and owned the narrative.
15 months later: $300k MRR.
You can do the same.

Question for you:
What are you building right now that might just need different positioning? 👇🏼
Reply and tell me. I read every email and often write back.

Tweet of the week

That's it for this week.
Until next week,
Keep building
