"Tibo, your playbook works because you have 100k+ followers. I'm starting from zero."
This is the #1 response I got from last week's newsletter.
Here's the truth:
You don't need an audience to use social media effectively.
In fact, having a big audience matters less now than it did 3 years ago.
Let me show you how 👇
PSST...I have a gift for you 👀 Launching on Product Hunt is hard. So I solved it for you! I built this because most Product Hunt launch advice is vibes with zero data behind it. Indie makers are flying blind on timing, positioning, and prep. Here's a free guided toolkit - 7 tools, no paywall - newsletter exclusive: It's yours: http://phlaunchpad.com/
The Algorithm Shift Nobody's Talking About
Big accounts are panicking right now.
50k+ follower accounts getting 200 views per post.
Meanwhile, brand new accounts with 47 followers are hitting 10k+ impressions.
What changed?
Platforms shifted from follower-based distribution to quality-based distribution.
X, TikTok, YouTube, Reddit - they all did this in the past few years.
Every post starts at zero now. Your follower count is just a number.
The only thing that matters: Does your content make people stop scrolling?
This is why big creators are complaining. Their audience advantage disappeared.
Which means if you're starting from zero, you're not actually behind.
You're competing on the same playing field as accounts with 100k followers.
They're trying to maintain old strategies. You can start with what actually works now.
Here are 4 methods to use social media without an audience 👇🏼
Method 1: Mine High-Engagement Posts
Here's what nobody does (but should):
Find viral posts in your niche. Look at who engaged with them.
Example: SEO tool launch on Product Hunt gets 500 upvotes.
Those 500 people just raised their hands, saying "I care about SEO tools."
Now you have a warm list of 500 people to reach out to.
The process:
- Find high engagement posts in your niche (100+ likes/comments)
- Export everyone who engaged
- Send personalized DMs or find their email addresses
- Pitch your solution with context added DM
DM template: "Hey [Name], saw you commented on [Author]'s post about [specific topic/problem]. I'm building [product] that does [one clear benefit related to that problem]. Still early, but already helping [number] people with [specific result]. Worth a quick look? Happy to give you early access if it's relevant."
Why this works:
- Opens with shared context (the post they engaged with)
- One line explanation of what you do
- Social proof (number of users)
- Low pressure ask
- Offers value (early access, not just a pitch)
These people already demonstrated interest.
You are fulfilling the market demand.
Superx.so has a search feature for this - type any topic and it finds viral tweets from the past 2 years.
Export everyone who engaged. instant warm lead list.
If you're into fitness, search "fitness" and find viral tweets from 6 months ago. Those people still care about fitness + thats a great inspiration source for your future content.
Method 2: Leverage Zero-Follower Reach
You can get 10k views on your first post now. This wasn't possible 3 years ago.
Here's the pattern platforms reward:
High quality signals:
- Time spent reading/watching (dwell time)
- Saves and bookmarks
- Shares to DMs
- Completion rate (for video)
Low quality signals:
- Generic engagement bait
- Clickbait that disappoints
- Content people scroll past in 2 seconds
What this means for you:
Stop trying to game the algorithm.
Create content you'd actually stop and read.
My simple 2 second test:
Would I send this to a friend? If no, it's not good enough.
Formats that work with zero followers:
X:
- Thread breakdowns with real numbers
- Contrarian takes on trending topics
- Behind the scenes building stories
TikTok/Instagram Reels:
- Problem → solution in 15 seconds
- "I spent $X so you don't have to" reviews
- Trend sounds with niche context
YouTube:
- Detailed tutorials (10+ minutes)
- "I tried X for 30 days" documentation
- Comparison videos with real testing
Reddit:
- Helpful comments in niche subreddits
- Detailed guides in relevant communities
- AMA style posts with proof
Useful beats promotional every time.
Method 3: Piggybacking on Existing Conversations
You don't need to create every conversation. Join the ones already happening.
Reply to mid sized accounts on X (10k-100k followers). Comment on LinkedIn posts in your industry. Answer questions in niche subreddits.
Add value in all three.
The best replies often get almost the same views as the original post. Your profile gets viewed by everyone reading the thread.
Remember, 10 valuable interactions before 1 promotional mention and you should be good.
Method 4: Use Tools That Don't Require Audience
Creating content can be hard. But using the right tools can make your jouney certainly easier:
SuperX.so: Go all in on X growth. This has everything you need.
PostSyncer.com: Schedule the same content across 5 platforms simultaneously. Test where your content performs without building 5 separate audiences.
LinkedIn Sales Navigator: Filter by job title, company, and activity. Find decision-makers who are already posting about your problem.
The New Reality
Old social media: Build audience first, monetize later
New social media: Get distribution first, audience builds as a side effect
Your first 100 customers won't all come from your followers.
They'll come from:
- People who engaged with competitor posts
- Algorithm showing your content to interested users
- Communities where your target customer already hangs out
Start there.
Tell me by replying:
What platform are you using without an audience right now? And what are your goals there? 👇🏼
I read every email and often reply!
Tweet of the week
This is so real. Get on it!
That's it for this week.
Until next week,
Keep building

P.S. "But I don't have an audience" is the new "But I don't know how to code." It was a valid excuse 5 years ago. Not anymore.
