People say SEO is dead. Which means they say blogs are dead too.
So we tested it.
We asked ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude 96 real questions and sorted all 2,671 sources they cited.
74% were blog content: listicles, articles and comparisons.
Clearly, blogs are not dead.
Here’s the 6-step version of how to get your blog cited 👇🏼

1 - Find the questions your buyers ask AI

Write down 5 to 10 real ones:
  • Best [your category]
  • [You] vs [competitor]
  • Alternatives to [competitor]
  • How to [problem you solve]
Run each one through the free AI Citation Analyzer. You’ll see which pages each AI cites today, and which type of page wins.

2 - Match the format to the question

Each question type has a favorite format:
  • “Best X”: listicles (73% of cited sources)
  • “Alternatives to X”: listicles (71%)
  • “X vs Y”: comparison pages (75%)
  • “How to”: guides and articles (55%)
  • “What is”: guides and articles (63%)
Write the format AI already cites.
Don’t try to change what’s working.

3 - Publish on your own domain

The best setup is yourbrand.com/blog. A subdomain works too.
Every post then builds your site’s authority, not a platform’s.
If you don’t have a blog yet:
Outrank will host yours for free. It’s free up to 10,000 visits a month, with your own domain included.

4. Cover the basics

  • Sitemap
  • Clean URLs
  • Structured data
  • Submit new posts to search engines (IndexNow)
Most blog tools do this for you. Check that yours does.

5. Be known before the question is asked

Every LLM cites a majority of blog content. ChatGPT is the only exception. Only 17% of its citations are blog content.
It reads about 36 pages per answer and cites 4. It builds a shortlist from what it already knows, then checks each brand’s own pricing and docs pages.
So:
  • Make your pricing and product pages answer questions plainly
  • Keep blogging. Perplexity and Claude cite blog content 85% and 94% of the time

6. Stay consistent and re-test

Re-run your questions every month. Track whether you show up.
Give it time. Across 2,119 sites, the median site doubled its Google clicks about 7 months in. Moonb went from no SEO strategy to 2,213 AI citations.
And of course, if you don’t have time to write great blogs, Outrank.so does it for you 😉

Before you think “this is too simple to be true”. Let me tell you:
This is simple. Not easy. Doing this well takes a lot of iterations and consistency.
