Running a business is not a 1 man job.
Don’t get me wrong…
You can totally start a business solo. But after a point, when the revenue is high and all your mental bandwidth is occupied — hiring is the best option.
And who you hire will dictate the long term trajectory of your company.
Both good and bad.
This is the story of one of my best hires yet →
A lot of you already know about him, as I posted this tweet a few days back:
But basically - I hired this 17 yo kid to help me with some SEO stuff and the results were insane. He was one of our star players.
I won’t say a lot. Instead, I’ll just point to the time he joined my company:
He was an SEO all rounder. His job when I hired him was to write blog posts for revid.ai. And he did that, but also did all of this:
- Revamped the landing copy
- Did keyword analysis and changed the copy for many tools in revid.ai/tools to rank them
- Built the image generation presets on Revid.ai by playing with Flux
- Found stock videos to integrate as background.
The results were almost instant. We went from almost no SEO traffic to 5k traffic PER DAY. Pretty insane if you ask me.
Unfortunately, we had to end our work together as he got into a prestigious high school program and wanted to focus on academics.
I also didn’t want to convince him to drop out and build this business with me because it’s a big risk and I don’t want to be the one to stop him from going to a great college.
But I’m pretty hopeful that we’ll work together in the future again and that he’ll go on to do great things in life. He has all the qualities one needs to succeed.
→ Impact oriented (not input oriented)
→ Not contained in a job description
→ Eager to learn and hustle his way through things
Wishing him all the best for his future!
But this tweet did 1 more thing — start a conversation about whether school/college is even worth it.
Honestly, I didn’t expect so many comments and polarised opinions.
Some people think that school is a must-do activity. While some people think that in 2024, school can be skipped.
My friend and fellow maker, Marc has gone pretty extreme in the second direction:
Now for me, as a father of 2 - this question is extremely important.
IS SCHOOL/COLLEGE STILL WORTH IT?
Personally, I think there are 2 sides to this -
→ Hard skills
→ Soft skills
And never confuse the 2. For they can’t be replaced by one another. Under ANY circumstances.
Now here’s my take:
I think ALL hard skills can be learnt online and on YouTube 10x efficiently.
In the last 10 years, I have almost never used any hard skills learned from college. Either those skills were completely redundant or became useless in less than 2 years of professional career.
The college had an incredibly positive impact on my soft skills tho.
My capacity to work in a group, speak in public, and present my ideas. All of them were introduced to me when I studied engineering.
Unfortunately, I don’t know another place to learn those soft skills other than school and college ... maybe this needs to be invented.
Many have tried, but most have failed. There isn’t anything relevant yet. Someone who cracks this will definitely scale past $1B and will change education as we know it.
To answer the question:
Yes, I think schools and colleges are relevant right now. But I hope a disruption is coming in the next 10 years.
So that was today’s edition! What do you think about the relevance of schools?
