Tech Twitter is a big echo chamber.
An opinion spreads fast. And if the right person says it - even faster.
Seeing this take everywhere lately:
“AI will kill the tech moat for SaaS and all market will reprice accordingly.”
And you know what? Maybe they're right.
But not in the way you think.
Let me break this down for you 👇
The Scary Prediction
Greg recently posted this Tweet which kinda caught fire:
If you’re too lazy to read the tweet, stop watching TikToks and reducing your attention span 🤣 - but here’s a summary:
- AI can copy SaaS products in 24h
- SMBs will abandon $100/month tools for $10 AI clones
- Enterprise stays but demands 50% discounts
- $500B+ market gets completely repriced
Sounds terrifying, right?
Here's My Take 🎯
I've been in SaaS for years now, and here's what I'm seeing:
1 - AI is a REAL moat killer
Don't discount this.
Tech is rarely the moat now, unless you are into deep tech and building the future of electronics and the internet as we know it (maybe 200 people in the world).
Anything you can code - AI can code too (probably faster)
Anyone telling you "AI is overhyped" is in for a rude awakening.
2 - BUT... we're not there yet
Have you tried these AI "clones"?
Quality is WAYYY below what people expect. Like, not even close.
Here’s an example, someone tried copying revid.ai :
3 - The future isn't "coming" - it's already here
Brace yourself. We're about to see a tsunami of cheap SaaS products.
So What's The Play? 🤔
As an entrepreneur, you are always told to go ALL IN.
I think that’s the wrong advice.
If you are a 21 year old college graduate with nothing to lose - sure! But with family, kids, and a whole lot of responsibility — going all in, is in fact, risky.
Here’s how you should (and I am) hedge against this AI threat:
1. Build an Audience
AI can copy your software. It can't copy your distribution.
2. Create a Personal Brand
Make people choose YOU, not just your product. Trust is often the most underpriced opportunity in business.
3. Own Unique Data
Know what people want. How they use your product. What actually works.
Do you really think it’s hard to code Facebook?
You could probably even get a couple 100 thousand users. But you can never touch the FB ad algorithm which is trained on billions (with a B) of data points.
Information is a moat.
4. Move FAST
While others wait for "market maturity" or "the right time" - you build.
Speed is of the essence.
5. Educate people
Sometimes a SaaS is great, not because of its feature, but because it educates you on doing something that you would otherwise not do at all.
Get paid to educate people, software then just becomes a medium.
Underrated moat.
The SaaS market isn't dying.
It's evolving.
And like any evolution, there will be winners and losers.
Winners = Builders who adapt NOW Losers = Those who wait and see
The bottom line:
Yes, AI will change everything.
No, it won't happen overnight.
But if you're not preparing NOW, you're already behind.
Here's what you should do TODAY:
Start building that audience.
Double down on your brand.
Move faster than you're comfortable with.
The clones are coming.
Make sure they're always playing catch-up.
